When one dedicates oneself to teaching Torah, and particularly to young people, it is common to encounter the question of science versus Torah. It appears to be a valid and compelling question, since science presents a series of "truths" so clear that the Torah does not accept them (or so it seems), and, automatically, the truths of the Torah are refuted.
However, there are certain points to consider in order to understand how there really is no contradiction or questioning between science and the Torah, namely:
1. Science deals with describing and predicting observable phenomena. To achieve this, many theories are proposed that attempt to define the rules behind these phenomena. Some theories are more famous and popular (such as the theory of evolution, the Big Bang, and Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation), while others are not.
The key point here is understanding that these are all theories. Some describe observable reality better than others, but they are still theories that may be valid today and not tomorrow. They are not perceived as theories in general knowledge because they are not taught in schools or disseminated in the media as such, but rather as laws and realities.
The Torah doesn't present theories, but facts. And these facts are based on God's revelation at Mount Sinai. And here we come to the second point:
2. Science uses the necessary models to describe reality, for example, the atomic model, or the description of the solar system centered on the sun, while the Torah uses other models to define reality, such as the sun and stars revolving around the earth, or the Talmudic description of a baby's gestation, where the father contributes the "red" and the mother the "white," whatever that may mean. However, there is no contradiction; they are simply different ways of describing the same thing. The reason for the difference lies in the intended purpose of the description. For example, if we say that man is the center of the universe (as the Torah states), we are saying, in other words, that man has a central responsibility and a fundamental mission in his life, whereas if man is simply located in some remote corner of the Milky Way, who says there is any reason for being, or that my actions are significant? Therefore, to support its perspective, the Torah proposes a geocentric system. And the same applies to each of the "old-fashioned" concepts that appear in the works of our sages; they are descriptive models aimed at extracting a lesson in the service of God, and not models that only describe reality but teach nothing.
This brings us to the third point:
3. The above does not reject all advances in different fields of technology, such as medicine and communications. The fact that a phenomenon is not described or its existence is not emphasized does not mean that it is not true in practice.
Each field of knowledge utilizes the necessary resources to define its function. That is to say, our sages clearly did not see the need to investigate the effects of radio waves or electricity, which does not mean we cannot use those resources. Once defined and put into practice (in radio and television, cell phones, or a simple incandescent light bulb), they can be used by everyone for good, even by our sages who never dedicated themselves to developing those things.
This is simply because, as mentioned earlier, everyone focuses on what is useful to them, and thus in Jewish wisdom we have thousands of books of rabbinic responsa on what blessing to say when eating a certain food, or profound treatises on Hebrew grammar, while we don't find many references to black holes and quantum physics...
All of this leads us to understand that there are no contradictions between science and the Torah; each simply has a different function and uses different tools. What is fundamental is that we learn to distinguish between science and science fiction—that is, that we open our eyes and minds to see and understand which parts of science are practical and empirical, and which parts are theories and descriptive models impossible to prove.
