People view the Torah's prohibitions as a burden and a source of suffering; woe to those who adhere to them, for they live sad lives, constantly oppressed by an invisible authority, by laws difficult to understand, and by a God who exacts a heavy price for transgressions...

But the truth is, it's not like that. God, in His immense goodness, provides us with a system to strengthen interpersonal bonds with our spouse, children, friends, and so on. This system, in turn, allows us to disconnect from the whirlwind of work, traffic, and labor and international conflicts. It's a system that costs no money and doesn't require us to travel miles from home to a spa to de-stress.

This system is called Shabbat. It happens once a week and only requires the willingness to immerse yourself in it. And the difference is so profound, it's sometimes scary to try...

Are you willing to try it? It's very simple: turn off your television (and/or radio) on Friday afternoon and don't turn it back on until Saturday night. Then let me know the results.
