Before creating the cosmos from nothing, He structured in His mind how all things would be. Even then, He wrestled with that thought, pondering, "Should it be? Or should it not be?""
Then He created all things according to that thought, and from among all His creations, He formed Adam, the first man. And within Adam He placed that inner struggle, and Adam became a living being.
Since then, it's in our hands: Should there be a world? Or desolate chaos? Does God's creation deserve to have been made by Him?

Okay, so questioning everything all the time isn't something secular people do...
No! Not at all! I would say quite the opposite; it comes from religious Jews (specifically) and is learned by laypeople, as you call them. As the teaching of our sages in Pirkei Avot is well known, "the shameful do not learn," and the explanation is because they do not ask questions...
Questioning is generally well-regarded in Judaism, but questioning for the sake of argument (in Hebrew, this is called "lekanter") is unacceptable. However, asking questions to learn and understand is perfectly fine.
Greetings!
