The nations cannot understand why the Jewish people should have a land. "If God and the scriptures and the heavens are what you're all about," they say, "why do you want a piece of land? Is God anywhere? Is God found by settling in a land, ruling a country, and defending it? Make up your minds: Do you want heaven or earth?""
Those words, perhaps, are never spoken. They are silent words, etched into the human mind. And they are the underlying theme of all their arguments with us: We don't belong here on Earth, where they belong, playing by their rules. Because God is in Heaven, and the Earth belongs to humanity.
But that is the mission of the Jewish people: that all may see that the same God who is in heaven is here on earth, in all of humanity's endeavors. For there is nothing except Him.
Starting with that specific, well-defined, and very special piece of land to which our destiny is tied.
